A Few Hours In The Anderson Valley

A gorgeous Sunday morning – we hopped in the car and headed north toward the Anderson Valley. As soon as we hit Cloverdale we left the freeway and headed onto that spectacular drive toward Mendocino County. The sky was bright blue as we drove through redwoods and vineyards – another one of those days I wished we had a convertible.

We pulled into Boonville just around lunchtime and hit our usual favorite – the Boonville General Store. I love this place – the haven of all things local and organic, they make their own mouth-watering breads, and offer a nice selection of local wines and beer. Not much can beat sitting on their deck in the sun, gazing across at the famous Boonville Hotel

Winding along 128, green hills and vineyards as far as you can see is so peaceful.

This day, instead of the usual wine tasting, we chose something new for us and stopped at The Apple Farm in Philo. I cannot believe we’ve never been to this magical place before! Endless acres of fruit trees, absolutely adorable guest cottages which can be rented for the night, and an honor system farm stand with fruit, cider, jams, and chutneys. Next time I definitely want to book a cottage for the night!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a die hard fan of both Napa and Sonoma, but it’s good to mix things up with a quieter, much less crowded wine country once in a while. And after all, if you keep driving, you’ll end up at the coast just south of Mendocino, so even more adventures await!
